Swedish Music – a few tips

A good way to reinforce your Swedish language learning is to listen to music with Swedish lyrics. Just make sure you find music that you actually like. We list a variety of Swedish artists and bands that you may like.

The Swedish music scene doesn’t really differ from that of the English speaking world in terms of style. In fact, Sweden is one of the largest music exporters in the world and some of the best-selling American and British pop stars of today are performing songs penned by Swedish song writers. A very large proportion of Swedish bands and artists sing in English and has been doing so for very long – you know, ABBA, Roxette, In Flames, Robyn, Zara Larsson, Avicii, Europe, Ghost, and so on and so forth. Why Sweden has become so successful at pop music deserves a blog post of its own, so we won’t delve into that now.

However, if you want to listen to music with Swedish lyrics, then there is a large number of artists and bands that you might or might not have heard of, that may be useful in your Swedish learning adventure. If you’re not familiar with Swedish popular culture it’s quite difficult to know where to start. So here are a few examples, sorted by category. This is by no means an attempt to create an exhaustive list, but it reflects both old and new Swedish music. Do comment below if you want other tips – or if you want to add something to the list. We’ve linked the artists’ names to their pages on Spotify, so click on them to find out if it’s for you or not.
